Aurelio Amendola was born in Pistoia in 1938 and approached photography in the late 1950s, as a self-taught photographer.
During his exceptional career as an art photographer, his work found a privileged field in sculpture photography, which he investigates with the same spirit of research both in the works of ancient and modern authors (starting from Pisano, Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello, up to Bernini, Canova), and in those of contemporary authors.
At the beginning of the 1990s he focused on the sculpture of Michelangelo, who became the photographer’s most frequented author, and at the same time the cornerstone of his use of black and white.
Dedicating himself intensely to contemporary themes, he managed to collect a real Gallery of Portraits of the most famous masters of the twentieth century: De Chirico, Pomodoro, Schifano, Lichtenstein, Warhol in his Factory. Thanks to his long personal relationship with many of them (Manz\u00f9, Fabbri, Ceroli, Vangi, Kounellis, Pistoletto, Parmiggiani, Paladino, Barni, Ruffi, Mainolfi) he created countless monographs accompanied by his shots. His partnership with Marino Marini and Alberto Burri was precious, with whom he developed a friendship that lasted until the painter’s last days.
