Chorda Cordis

4th – 31th July 2025
opening Friday 4th July 2025, h 6.00 pm

Galleria Immaginaria of Florence presents the exhibition Chorda Cordis by the artist Kisako Umino, on Friday 4th July from 6 pm.

Chorda Cordis literally heartstring is a Latin expression with multiple interpretations and multiple suggestions. It refers to something that arouses strong emotions, to something that vibrates in the reciprocal bond between the rope and the heart. So Kisako inserts rope in his latest sculptures.
Each sculpture allows to see the perfection of its form inextricably tied to a rope that wraps or binds or tightens or caresses, defining its sense and meaning. Each work is effort, battle, energy in search of harmony, serenity, love.
Only earth, water and fire to shape each sculpture. Earths of different colors for sculptures of different colors. The artist’s hands, like those of a demiurge, create primordial, soft, rounded, sinuous and sometimes even hard forms: spheres, half spheres, absolute volumes such as perforated stones or other natural figures, assemblages of forms to build regal entities.
For Kisako, the strong action of the tie guarantees safety even if each work has fragility in itself. As time goes by, the rope can break into a pile of threads, the terracotta can crumble. Everything can return to nature. The spirit remains, the idea remains.

KISAKO UMINO

Kisako was born in Osaka, Japan, where she graduated in mathematics. She then moved to Florence where she graduated in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Her long artistic career finds full inspiration in nature, combining, in her intimate research, the different Eastern and Western visions. She shapes the earth by creating forms with surfaces that are now smooth and now rough. Surfaces that you want to caress as you would caress a smoothed stone or a shell streaked by the continuous waves of the sea.

She takes us closer to nature. In front of each of her works we cannot be indifferent. We are not only looking at the perfection of an artifact but we are perceiving the beauty of something that is part of the universe. In looking, we also become part of it. This is the strength of art.
