BIOGRAPHY

Claudio Capotondi, born in the ancient Etruscan city of Tarquinia in Italy in 1937, lived and worked in Rome and New York, and then moved to the city of Pietrasanta until 2021, near the Carrara marble quarries, where he created and sculpted his sculptures by his hands. To date he has produced 26 of public art works in Italy, Austria, the United States, China, Japan, Libya, and has held solo exhibitions in Rome, Florence, Turin, Carrara, Bari, New York, Paris, Finland, and group exhibitions in many cities around the world. In the year 2000 he received the coveted Michelangelo Prize from the city of Carrara. His sculptures can be found in various public and private collections. In 2022 he returned to Tarquinia where he lives and continues his work.

Claudio Capotondi’s artistic thought is based on the fusion of rigorous geometric knowledge and the deep dynamics of nature. The author conceives his works as living organisms, integrating the breath of biological existence with the rules of solid geometry, with a predilection for the analytical investigation of the sphere. This research is not limited to a mere abstract game, but expresses a constant tension linked to genetic energy, to the birth of matter through liberating torsions and fractures. In this context, planning and the graphic mark play a crucial role: the works do not stem from sudden flashes of intuition, but rather from a strict metric and a sensual warmth that governs complex labyrinthine devices, perspective paradox, and spatial continuity. The drawing and the impressed marks thus shape themselves as a writing of structures, a true logbook that translates thoughts into stony symbols and emotions into precise formal tensions.
