The exhibition Memorie della corrente by the artist Pino Caminiti opens on Friday 16 June 2023 at 6.00 pm at the Galleria Immaginaria in Florence.

Years ago, Pino Caminiti decided to change his life.
It was the life of a politician, engaged in a difficult struggle to change his city, his region. Faithful to the ideals of his youth, when a fairer, freer, more humane, and more dignified world seemed within reach. But his generation was defeated in this fight. We hope that others, younger, will take it up again.
Pino Caminiti rented a house, not far from his city, Reggio Calabria, on the shores of the Ionian Sea. The sea of Ulysses’ journeys, of Magna Graecia.

Over time, many ships have wrecked there. And between its nearby shores (Italy, Greece, Africa), the sea has tirelessly carried the remains, deposited the traces of human life. Wood and iron, bones, rags, torn bark and roots, broken tools from distant games and wars.

Pino Caminiti walked the seashore, day after day. Looking at the sand encrusted with shattered and dispersed materials, and listening to the incessant noise of the flow. And from these fragments, from this matter without a figure and without use, a work was born, an art that is made of ruins and fragments, but also of memories, stories, traumas and revelations, agreements and dissonances, identity and alienation.

From the waste of time and space, in proximity and in distance, a form, a meaning, a story come to meet us and challenge us, figures from an elsewhere that is also home, of a vision that is perhaps also prophecy.

Against the glamor of the post-human, and its facilities, Pino Caminiti keeps at the center of his work a difficult, fragile, tenacious memory of man and his living space. And it tells us that only in this memory can we glimpse something like a meaning of our common heritage, and perhaps a hope for our common future.
